MERV 8 handles dust and lint and protects the equipment, which is what builders typically install. MERV 11 adds most pollen and pet dander, a sensible target for homes with allergies. Media Cabinets Beat One-Inch Filters

A four or five inch media cabinet mounted at the return holds a deep pleated filter with several times the surface area of a one inch throwaway. More area means high capture with low resistance, and filter changes drop to once or twice a year instead of monthly. This is standard practice on our installations: a recent Menifee job pairing a Goodman 80,000 BTU furnace with a matched coil went in with a proper filter base as part of the install, because filtration is part of the system, not an accessory.

What MERV rating should I use?

The highest your system can handle without choking airflow, which depends on your return and blower. As a rule of thumb: MERV 8 for basic dust, MERV 11 for allergies, MERV 13 if wildfire smoke or fine particles are the concern. We verify with a static pressure reading rather than guessing. The static pressure reading is the difference between a filter that captures more and one that quietly strangles the system. Every step up in MERV adds resistance, and a blower forced to pull against too much of it loses airflow, efficiency and eventually components. Matching the rating to what your return and blower can actually support is the whole job.

How often should a media filter be changed?

Deep-pleat media filters typically go six to twelve months between changes, versus monthly for one inch filters. Homes with pets, nearby construction or heavy AC use land at the short end. We can check it at maintenance visits so you do not have to think about it. The interval is worth respecting because a loaded media filter behaves like a higher rating than it was chosen for: resistance climbs as the pleats fill, and airflow falls with it. The filter keeps capturing well right up to the point it starts costing cooling capacity, which is why the schedule, not appearance, should drive the change.

Can a high-MERV filter damage my system?

Not the filter itself, but the added resistance can. On a system without the return area to support it, a dense filter drops airflow enough to freeze coils and overheat furnaces. That is why we measure before recommending, and why media cabinets are often the safer path to high capture. The failure sequence is gradual, which is what makes it sneaky: airflow drops a little, run times stretch, and by the time a coil freezes or a limit switch trips the filter has been undersized for months. A media cabinet solves the problem with surface area, spreading the same capture across deep pleats so resistance stays low even at high MERV.
