A tankless unit heats water on demand instead: no reservoir to run out, no standing tank to corrode, and floor space back, in exchange for a higher initial cost and a more involved install, since gas supply and venting often need upgrading to feed it.

If your home already has a gas line at the heater, a gas unit usually stays the practical choice: recovery is fast and operating costs are typically lower. The install carries more to get right, venting, drip leg, gas flex and combustion safety among it, which is exactly the checklist work you are paying a licensed contractor for. Electric units are simpler machines with fewer failure points, need no venting, and fit homes without gas service, at the cost of slower recovery. Should I repair my water heater or replace it?
Fix it when the failed part is small and the unit is young: thermostats, elements, thermocouples and valves are all economical repairs. Replace it when the tank itself is leaking, which no repair can undo, or when a unit already near the ten year mark needs major work. Is a tankless water heater worth the switch?
It depends on what you value.
