Replacing a water heater means making two choices at once: how the water is stored, tank or tankless, and what heats it, gas or electric. The Case for a Tank
A tank keeps a reservoir of hot water ready and re-heats it as it is used. It costs less up front, installs quickly, and its failure modes are simple and well understood, which is exactly why the standard 40, 50 and 75 gallon Bradford White units make up the steady core of our install log. The Case for Tankless
A tankless unit heats water on demand: no reservoir to run out, no standing tank to corrode, and floor space back. The trade is a higher initial cost and a more involved install. A high output unit can draw more gas at full fire than the line that fed the old tank heater was sized to carry, so gas supply and venting often need upgrading, and skipping that calculation produces cold water sandwiches and nuisance faults that get blamed on the equipment. Gas: Fast Recovery, More Install to Get Right
If your home already has a gas line at the heater, gas usually stays the practical choice: recovery is fast and operating costs are typically lower. What separates gas quotes is everything around the tank, venting, combustion safety, the gas flex with its own shutoff, and the drip leg that catches debris in a serviceable stub instead of inside the gas valve. Electric: Simpler, and Sometimes the Right Answer
Electric units are simpler machines with fewer failure points. The cost is slower recovery, which makes sizing to the household most of the value: too small means cold showers, too large means paying to keep water hot that nobody uses. Whichever way you go, the water is the aging factor. Tanks in this area commonly give out around the ten year mark, sooner than the national norm, because scale collects on elements and at the bottom of the tank. A tankless unit concentrates the same problem in its heat exchanger, where scale insulates the water from the flame until efficiency slides and error codes start. The answers are maintenance and treatment: an annual flush for tanks, a descaling flush for tankless (see tankless maintenance), and treating hard water at the source to protect the unit you just bought.

Not by itself. Tankless ends the run-outs, but the wait at a distant tap is set by your plumbing layout, not the heater type. Endless hot water that takes ninety seconds to arrive is not the upgrade anyone paid for, which is why recirculation pumps and loop work, like the two tees we added on a Hemet project to speed hot water to the farthest fixture, are part of a well planned install. The distinction matters when comparing quotes, because the heater is only half of hot water satisfaction and the delivery path is the other half.
